Emergencies during treatment

Loose bracket, poking wire or lost aligner: what to do when you have a problem with your braces or aligners, and when to contact us.

True emergencies are rare

Most problems with braces are uncomfortable but not urgent. Please contact us during practice hours so we can advise on the next step. If an accident has injured teeth, jaw or face, seek a dental emergency service or emergency department immediately.

Loose bracket or band

If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and call us. If it irritates, a little orthodontic wax can help. Please do not try to re-attach a loose bracket yourself.

Poking wire

Gently push the wire end aside with a clean cotton bud or a pencil eraser, or cover it with orthodontic wax. Please contact us for an appointment.

Lost or broken aligner

Get in touch with us. Depending on your stage of treatment, we will advise you to keep wearing the previous aligner, move to the next one or have a replacement made.

Soreness after adjustments

Some tenderness for a few days after an appointment or aligner change is normal; soft food helps. If pain increases or persists, please contact us.
