The True Cost of Orthodontics in Switzerland: A Transparent Guide

What you actually pay, what insurance covers, and how to plan your investment

Cost is a legitimate and important part of any orthodontic decision. I have always believed that transparent pricing — presented clearly, without vague ranges or surprise additions — is a basic aspect of good patient care. So let me give you the clearest picture I can.

What Drives the Cost of Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment costs are not arbitrary. They reflect the complexity of your case, the technology used, the duration of treatment, and — critically — the expertise of the provider. A specialist orthodontist (Fachzahnarzt für Kieferorthopädie) has completed an additional four years of postgraduate training beyond dental school. That training, combined with ongoing research and clinical experience, is what you are paying for.

Typical Costs in Switzerland

In general, orthodontic treatments in Switzerland typically range from several thousand to over ten thousand Swiss francs. Factors that may influence the final cost include the severity of tooth or jaw misalignment, the choice between traditional braces and clear aligners, and any additional procedures required for your individual treatment.

What Swiss Health Insurance Covers

Basic mandatory health insurance (LAMal/KVG) does not cover orthodontics for adults, and covers it for children only in exceptional cases involving severe malocclusion caused by canine impaction or accident.

Supplementary dental insurance (Zusatzversicherung), however, may cover part of the orthodontic costs for children and teenagers, depending on the policy and the age at which it was taken out. Coverage varies considerably between insurers and products. I recommend checking your policy carefully and asking your insurer for written confirmation before treatment begins.

"Cost should never be the reason someone lives with a smile they are unhappy with. We offer flexible payment plans and work with you to find a pathway that fits your situation."

Questions to Ask Your Insurer

  • What is the maximum annual or lifetime orthodontic benefit?
  • Is there a minimum severity threshold (e.g., DAI or IOTN score)?
  • Does coverage require treatment by a specialist, or any dental provider?
  • Is there a waiting period after policy inception?
  • Are retainers covered post-treatment?

Flexible Payment Options for Orthodontic Treatment

To make treatment accessible, we work with ZAK Zahnärzte Kasse and offer flexible payment structures: quarterly instalments throughout treatment at no extra cost, or a monthly direct debit arrangement for longer cases. Every payment plan is agreed upon transparently before treatment begins.
